The use magic device skill allows characters trained in it to subtly manipulate
their interactions with magic items, enabling them to bypass restrictions that
would normally prevent their usage. These include level, alignment and class
based restrictions.
Each restriction has a points value indicating its difficulty to offset. If the
sum of these exceed the character's UMD skill percentage (plus mastery bonus),
the item cannot be used. This is checked for each item separately.
Restriction point values are as follows:
Alignment: 40 points
Class: 40 points
Each level from 2- 10: 15 points
Each level from 11- 20: 14 points
...
Each level from 81- 90: 7 points
Each level from 91-100: 60 points
Special: level-based points are halved for translucent items
Example: A level 75 character wants to wear a level 81 item for another class.
The point cost is 40 (class) + 5*8 (levels 76-80) + 7 (level 81) = 87,
so an effective UMD skill of 87% or higher is required.
At level 100, UMD mastery increases the effective spell level when using items
for spellcasting, such as scrolls, wands, staves, potions or pills.
