Helping
Here's all that is expected of the HELPERs: * Pay attention to all channels when you're online, and when a question arises, answer to the best of your ability. * Do not pretend you know more than you do .. it's okay to admit you don't know something, but even better if you can find the helpfile that answers it, and direct the newbie to that helpfile. * Help with clarifying the helpfiles, in the case where the newbie doesn't understand the helpfile .. also note Quirky with some tips that would help the helpfiles be more clear. Point out where more helpfiles are needed, or where more keywords are needed to access a particular helpfile. * Do not abuse your helper status to take advantage of a newbie who is pkill. You may kindly offer to duel with a newbie pkiller, or encourage them to stay in safe if there are threats around, or even suggest that they recreate and learn the mud as a non-pkiller. Some people just really like pkill, and may decide to stick with it no matter what you say to them, and those people you MAY jump because they will need the practice. However, if any newbie pkiller asks for help on a quest to somewhere, or dirs to somewhere good to level, you may not take advantage of that knowledge. Pretend you're an immortal for just a moment, and be objective about your response: use the opportunity to inform that player that it is dangerous to divulge their location, or simply ignore the response if anyone gives it. As a helper, you're basically one step down from immortals in the level of trust these new players give to you. Please take it as a serious responsibility. Here's what is not expected: * Do not do quests for newbies. Help them to find directions to the areas, help them learn to explore areas, just give them general guidance. If you do their quests for them, they learn nothing! :P Use your judgement though, there probably are quests that may be too hard for them to do on their own, and I don't discourage you from tagging along and helping if that's the case. * You do not need to become a "spellup whore" for newbies, but you may offer assistance via spells if you choose. Be careful with when you give spells, because some newbies will come to expect it, and then get greedy :P
