Skilled magic users have learned to focus their powers when casting
combat spells, making them even more deadly. When holding an object, the
focus is intensified, no matter what the object. A good magic-user can
elicit magic power from anywhere.
More specifically : Holding an object while casting increases spell damage
by 20%. This is independent of the focus skill. There is also a +20% chance
to penetrate saves. These bonuses are retained with the dagger focus skill and
the values are based on a 100% skill.
The focus skill itself provides a spell damage bonus of up to 40%, but is
cut in half if you don't have a focus object. Dagger focus provides you
bonuses to spell damage/saves penetration, but it does not make your dagger
count as a focus object for the purpose of the focus skill. Below are some
examples of how the math plays out with various skills:
Focus and Dagger Focus at 100%. Dual-wielding daggers:
+20% spell penetration
+20% + 40%/2 = 40% spell damage
Whereas holding an orb (with or without dagger focus) would give you:
+20% spell penetration
+20% + 40% = +60% spell damage
Dual-wielding daggers with 100% focus but not dagger focus will only give
+40%/2 = +20% spell damage
When wielding a wrist-shield, the effectiveness of your focus object or dagger
focus skill is reduced by 1/3 to 2/3, depending on your wrist shield skill.
Instruments do not count as focus objects without the instruments skill.
